Willkie at Culver Military Academy
Willkie at Culver (24 K)

Willkie hated Culver, primarily because the strict military discipline of the camp went against his nature. Only with great reluctance did he don the academy’s naval uniform shown at left. In addition, Willkie fought against the traditional hazing Culver newcomers invariably received at the hands of older students. As a result, Willkie received a more vigorous hazing than usual. This must have been a major reason why Willkie was homesick most of the time, even though a good friend from Elwood was there with him.

Many years later, when recalling his summer at Culver, Willkie said he only really enjoyed the sailing and swimming lessons he received on Lake Maxinkuckee. From his parents’ point of view, however, Willkie’s summer experience was a success because it subdued his wild streak somewhat -- and his grades at Elwood High School did subsequently improve.
