'Whiskey for Me'
(and beer for my friend)
Liner Notes
History:
At last, a song with a story behind it. The hook line for this song came directly out of the mouth of a displaced cowboy in the audience of a Long Island club. This club was in the vicinity of a newly-built horse racing track and the supplier of the song idea must have been one of the horse handlers, at least that's what I like to believe. On Saturday night, the club would fill up with these people after their last race was finished and they would stay untill closing. At the time, I was working with the band Cherokee Horizon (which I affectionately called Turkey HOrizon because my wife, Anne, misheard the name when I told it to her and asked "Turkey Horizon?". Either name is equally meaningful I guess. So we always called them "The Turkeys" between ourselves. The band consisted of John Thomas (head honcho and unintentional comedian), his wife Vivian Thomas, Vivian's brother Robert (playing bass on the recording) and me.
So, like I was saying. Come this particular Saturday night, the band is on it's first or second break when the troops start to clambor in. After a couple minutes, anxious to begin celebrating, this one cowboy takes off his cowboy hat, stands up at his table and in a very loud and clear voice entones "Whiskey for me and beer for my friend" (probounced "mah fraaayend". We all broke up it was so funny, and I thought to myself "now that's a song title if I ever heard one".
Maybe you had to be there.
Recording Notes:
The song was recorded in the Rockville Center house with the studio in the basement. The basic tracks (rhythm guitar, bass, drums and lead vocal) were recorded in one go using my 2 track TEAC. I added some lead guitar to it later on. On the session are Robert Amoracino (bass turkey) and his friend Gary something. Robert couldn't resist putting in his little discordant bass lick with vocal accompanyment just after the bridge before the last chorus. He was into punk rock and his current hero was Gary Wilson. That's what he's shouting after his self-appointed bass solo of six monotone notes, "Gary Wilson", in case you were wondering what was happening there.
