Let's see now, what was I thinking of when I wrote this song; of me? No, not really. This is another of those songs that seem to spring up out of someone elses life. Or maybe it's like this. If you had ever loved someone who dumped you, or even imagined you loved someone who dumped you, or even were dumped by someone you didn't even like much but later convinced yourself that they were the love of your life, well then you'd like to believe the words of the first two verses and the chorus of the song. So, since that has happened to everyone in one form or another, I guess it's a song about everyone's life.
In the third verse we see our hero revealing that he's not really sneering at his former lover, but actually trying to get her to see that they have both made mistakes and should reunite. Or maybe he just wants to get her to come back to him so he can dump her. I don't know, decide for yourself.
Recording Notes:
This recording is from the band Quickdraw recorded live at Sundance, a big fancy dance hall / salloon out on Long Island. If I remember correctly, this was on Christmas Eve or some such night when we all should have been at home. That's why you don't really hear anyone in the audience, we were virtually alone. So we did a bunch of original tunes, this being one of them. Somehow this tape contains more of Lyle's songs than mine even though this was supposed to be my band. I wonder how that happened. I wonder why I didn't notice it at the time.
So, there we are up on this big, fancy stage playing our tunes for nobody but the soundman and his tape recorder, and now for you as well.
Aside: There used to be a live recording we made at another place on Long Island called the Right Track Inn. That one was a "showcase" performance so it was a much more polished show consisting totally of original material, mostly my own songs. That tape, however is there only in my catalog now, the tape itself has vanished.
