'Inglewoods'
Liner Notes
History:
This song was written in 1971 or 1972 while living in LA and "working" for a publishing house. I put working in quotes because the songwriters didn't actually get paid but we didn't really have to do anything either. The deal was that we signed a contract with the publisher that gave them the rights to our songs and in return, we got to come in to the office once a week to hear who was currently looking for songs and to play the tapes of the songs we wrote and recorded last week. Pretty good deal, huh?
I don't actually remember if I brought this song in or not. It's really just a song I wrote for myself. It was written about the city in L.A where my friend Lyle and I lived after moving there from Minnesota to become rich and famous. The city was Inglewood and it is the home of the LA International Airport where we were subjected to the "giant silver buzzards" roaring and screaming overhead every 20 seconds or so (and lasting for 19 seconds) while filling the air with jet exhaust. It was a lot like living in a tent behind a city bus that never moves, runs all day and spews smoke constantly. It's a happy little song.
Recording Notes:
The song was recorded (as were all the other songs from this period that you will never hear) in a bedroom closet with two microphones and Lyle's Panasonic reel-to-reel tape recorder. What can I say about that; it was dark and crowded but you almost couldn't hear the airplanes while you were in there.
As Groucho would say (and did say in fact); "Into the closet where men are empty overcoats".
