'Desperate Love'
Liner Notes
History:
And now for something completely different. This song was written while we were living in the big old Rockville Center house in New York. That was the house where John spent the bulk of his life before the age of 12 and Melanie spent her first three years. That was also the house where I built a rehearsal / recording studio in the basement (the one that Melanie tried to fill up with water). The rooms in this were so large that we had four couches in the living room and room to spare.
I'm telling you all that because I don't remember much about the writing of this song. It obviously was recorded after I borrowed a banjo from Sue Westling during one trip back to Minnesota. It's obvious to me anyway because I know I dinn't have that beautiful Gibson banjo at that time and that's the only other banjo I've had (except the one I stomped on in my closet when I lived at home in Minnesota). That one was so cheap that it was impossible to play it without bending the neck-to-body joint and causing it to always be out of tune.
So what's the song about? I don't know, some hillbilly singing about his girl friend, Becky Sue Lynn Cavedweller or something. Or maybe it is an attempt to capture the feeling of discovering love after a lifetime of lonliness and desperately hoping never to lose it.
Recording Notes:
This is another of the basement recordings from the house mentioned above. This one is a sound-on-sound recording made using my old TEAC 2 track. The multi-tracking (banjo, mandolin, vocals and whatever) is produced by recording one instrument on the left channel and them copying that channel to the right channel while playing and recording the next instrument on the right channel. Then you copy the right channel back to the left channel while recording something else on the left channel. It get's tricky since you can't go back and fix anything later but it sounds better than I would have expected.
This is the same studio which produced such hits as "whiskey For Me" and "It's A Baseball Bat Song".
