BURNS FATAL TO MINERAL COUNTY GIRL YESTERDAY

Passing Motorists See Violet Maxine Fout Running In Field On Mountain With Dress Aflame

Violet Maxine Fout, sixteen year-old daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. D. H. Fout, was fatally burned in a field near the home of her parents on Allegany Front about ten miles west of Keyser yesterday afternoon. A passing truck driver saw the girl running in the field with her dress aflame. Other motorists stopped and helped to extenguish the burning clothing.
The girl was brought to the Potomac Valley Hospital where she succumbed shortly before 9 o'clock last night. She was at home with a younger sister, her mother and father being away from home at the time.
Details of the tragedy are unclear. The girl told attendants at the hospital here that she was sitting in front of a stove in the home when her dress caught fire. Witnesses who saw her running in the field say the brush and weeds behind her were on fire and they thought she had been trapped by those flames. The tragedy happened about four o'clock yesterday afternoon.
The girl is survived by her parents and a sister who live near U.S. Route 50 on the Allegany Front. She was the grand daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Pancake of Laurel Dale. She was well known in Keyser, having been a sophomore at Keyser High School last year. The funeral will be conducted from the home of her grand parents Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. John A. Wood pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be made in the Ward cemetery.
A strange coincidence is that the girl's uncle, Elsworth C. Fout and six cousins were burned to twenty years ago when a house near the sight of the present tragedy burned in an early morning fire on Friday March 17, 1916.

New Creek Youth Is Killed Instantly

Jack Pancake Pinned Under Truck After Accident Early This Morning On Rt. 220

A seventeen-year-old New Creek youth was killed instantly early today when the truck he was driving on Route 220 near Keyser crashed into a tree and turned over, pinning him under it.
The victim was identified as Jack Andrew Pancake, son of Mrs. E. K. Aronhalt, New Creek, a driver for Murphy Brothers Coal and Trucking Co., Elk Garden.
State Police Trooper W. F. Bowley, who is investigating the accident, said young Pancake was apparently driving a GMC coal truck towards Keyser on New Creek Drive about 3 a. m. when it left the highway in front of the residence of S. H. Brode, about 2 1/2 miles south of Keyser.
The truck crashed into a tree headon, with both front wheels being wrapped around the trunk, Bowley said. The vehicle "climbed" the tree a few feet and then toppled over into the road, pinning Pancake under the cab.
Death was apparently instantaneous. Pancake was pronounced dead on arrival at Potomac Valley Hospital from a broken back and fractured skull.
After inspecting the scene of the accident this morning, State Police said it was their opinion that the truck hit a piece of pulpwood that had fallen from another truck into the road, causing Pancake to lose control of his vehicle and crash into the tree.
It was the first traffic fatality in Mineral County since last April.
The victim's father, Lester K. Pancake, is dead.
Besides his mother he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: M. Bruce Pancake, Stoney Run; Mrs. Eloise Shears, Mrs. Samuel Umstot, Keyser; Lester Pancake, with the Air Force in California; Mrs. Joanna Papaleo, Norfolk, Va.; Samuel, Charles and Barbara Ann Pancake, all of New Creek.
The body is at the Markwood Funeral Home, where a service will be held. The time has not yet been set.
