PANCAKE FAMILY RECORDS

OF

HAMPSHIRE COUNTY, VIRGINIA/WEST VIRGINIA

Hampshire County was created in 1753 from Frederick County. In 1785 Hardy County was created from the southern half of Hampshire. A portion of Hardy County was returned to Hampshire on December 4, 1787. The western part of Hampshire County became Mineral County in 1866.

          Stephen Colvin, John Forman, Junr, William Forman and Uriah Blew or any three
          of them being first sworn are appointed to view and mark out the most
          convenient way for a road from Pancake's Ferry to the Main road by the hanging
          rocks and make a report of their proceedings to April Court.  Page 2.

          On the report of the persons appointed to view the most convenient way for a
          road from Pancakes Ferry to the main road by the Hanging Rocks ordered that the
          road be established accordingly pursuant to the said report and it is ordered
          that the surveryor of the road from Earsoms to Blew's and the tithables under
          him work the same and that he have the same cleared and kept in good repair.

Page 280 - List of public ferries of 1790 included:  "Over the South
	   branch [of the Potomac River] from the land of John Pancake
	   to that of Jacob Earsom."  The rate of the ferry at John
           Pancake's was five cents for a man and the same for a horse.

Page 347 - The Bank of Romney was granted its charter on September 3,
	   1888; one of the board of directors was I. H. C. Pancake.

Page 353 - John Champe, who attempted to capture Benedict Arnold during
	   the Revolutionary War, . . . "took up his residence on the
           South branch, on land now belonging to John M. Pancake, near
           the Haunted Gate, five miles south of Romney."

Page 355 - The militia roll of Captain John Blue, dated April 28, 1790.
	   Among those listed are:  John Pancake, Simon Pancake, William
	   Linton, and William Corbett.  [Joseph Pancake, born 1789, of
	   Virginia and Madison Co., Ohio married first Susan Linton, the
	   daughter of William Linton, and secondly Margaret Corbit.  The
	   1820 Ohio Census Index shows John Pancake p. 57, Joseph Pancake
	   p. 58, and William Linton p. 58; all of Range Twp., Madison
	   County.]

Page 369 - "In (1762) Romney was made the county seat, and a wooden
	   court house was afterwards built between the present store
	   of J. H. C. Pancake and the foot of the hill, southwest."
	   [This is presumably a misprint for I. H. C. Pancake.]

Pages 400-408 - "This chapter will be closed with a list of about two
	   hundred persons who early availed themselves of the opportunity
	   to possess Fairfax lands which had been confiscated by the
	   state . . . . The date when they took up their land, the number
	   of acres, and location are given:"
	   Page 407 - 1796.  John Pancake, 50 acres, on South branch.

Page 436 - "Those who elected new members (of the Romney Literary
	   Society) between 1869 and 1886 were . . . John S. Pancake . . .
	   I.H.C. Pancake . . . ."

Page 546 - John Pancake gave assistance in compiling data for the
	   chapter on Hampshire County's role in the Civil War.

Page 548 - J. C. Pancake was present at a court held for Hampshire County
           on May 27, 1861.  John M. Pancake, a member of the Committee
           of Safety, and two others were appointed to execute bonds to
           be used for war purposes and the support of families of
           volunteers in service.

Page 595 - In 1861, Silas R. Pancake enlisted in Company F, Seventh
	   Virginia Cavalry, CSA.

Page 621 - Isaac Pancake was a member of the Hampshire Guards, organized
	   in 1858.  During the Civil War it was known as Company K.

Page 624 - Joseph A. Pancake, S. Pancake, and John S. Pancake were
	   privates in Company D, Eleventh Virginia Cavalry, commanded
	   by Captain E. H. McDonald.

Page 695 - Susie M. Pancake was among those who contributed labor and
	   money to build the Confederate Monument in Hampshire County;
	   dedicated on September 26, 1867.

Part III, Family Sketches:

Pages 725-726 - "JOHN S. PANCAKE, farmer, resident of Romney district,
	   son of Joseph C. and Ellen D. Pancake, of Irish and German
	   ancestry, was born 1846; married, 1884, to Margaret, daughter
	   of Robert W. and Sarah E. Gilkeson; children, Emily V.,
	   William C., and Elizabeth G.  Mr. Pancake has an interest in
	   an extensive peach farm near Romney, and also devotes his
	   time to the raising of and dealing in stock.  He was in the
	   Confederate army."

Page 726 - "JOSEPH S. PANCAKE, farmer, a resident of Romney district, son
	   of Joseph C. and Ellen Pancake, was born 1856; married, 1897,
	   to Sallie, daughter of John J. and Bettie Inskeep."

	   "JOSEPH C. PANCAKE, farmer, resident of Romney district, son
	   of Isaac and Sallie Pancake, of Irish, Welsh, and German
	   ancestry was born 1814; married, 1843, to Ellen D., daughter
	   of Silas and Maria Reese; children, Sarah M., Isaac H. C.,
	   John S., Mary B., William C., Andrew F., Joseph S., and
	   Sydna M."

	   "FREDERICK PANCAKE, farmer, resident of Romney district, son
	   of A. J. and Ann Jemima Pancake, of German ancestry, was born
	   1860; married, 1886, to Sarah W., daughter of J. D. and Sarah L.
	   Miller.  His child is John A. Pancake."

	   "I. H. C. PANCAKE, merchant, resident of Romney, son of
	   Joseph C. and Ellen  D. Pancake, of German, Scotch, and Irish
	   ancestry, was born 1845; married, 1874, to Fannie, daughter
	   of Lemuel and Isabella Campbell, of Virginia; children,
	   Ellen C., E. Blair, L. Campbell, Joseph C., and Fannie G."

JOHN I. PANCAKE

     ROMNEY - John Inskeep Pancake, 62, died Friday at his residence following an illness of five years.
     Born in Hampshire County, he was a son of the late Joseph S. and Sally W. (Inskeep) Pancake.
     Mr. Pancake was president and manager of Pancake Chevrolet, Inc. until his retirement five years ago due to ill health.
     He was a member of Romney Presbyterian Church and was an elder of that church. He was a director of the Bank of Romney and was past president of the Romney Lions Club. He was also a member of Mt. Clinton Lodge 86 AF&AM.
     Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Rose (Fretwell) Pancake, two daughters, Mrs. Renick C. Williams, Moorefield and Mrs. William E. Hicks Jr., Morgantown; three sons, Rev. Joseph S. Pancake, Summersville, W. Va.; John W. Pancake, Romney and Richard W. Pancake, Morgantown; a brother Samuel R. Pancake, Romney and nine grandchildren.
     Services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at Romney Presbyterian Church. Rev. David Nash will officiate and interment will be in Indian Mound Cemetery.
     Friends are being received at the Shaffer Funeral Home.

SAMUEL R. PANCAKE

     ROMNEY - Samuel Rees Pancake, 69, former owner of Pancake Chevrolet, Inc., died yesterday at Winchester (Va.) Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
     Mr. Pancake, who resided at 205 East Main Street, founded the car dealership in the 1930s with his brother, John I. Pancake, who died last year.
     Mr. Pancake also was a farmer and was a member of the board of directors of the Romney Farm Credit Association, the Baltimore District Credit Association and the First National Bank of Romney. He also was a member of the Romney Presbyterian Church.
     Born in Hampshire County, he was a son of the late Joseph S. and Sally Wright (Inskeep) Pancake.
     Surviving are his widow, Effie (D'Aiuto) Pancake; two daughters, Mrs. Charles H. Bean, Martinsburg, and Mrs. Donald W. Maphis, Salisbury, N. C., and five grandchildren.
     The body is at the Shaffer Funeral Home where friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
     Services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Romney Presbyterian Church by Rev. David Marsh. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery.

         Miss Fannie Graham Pancake, of Romney, W. Va., has been appointed maid of honor and sponsor from West Virginia to the Confederate reunion at New Orleans, April 25th to 28th. Miss Pancake's only sister married a nephew of Mrs. Stonewall Jackson.


August 17, 1906:

         Mrs. Finlay Pancake, of Omaha, Neb., is visiting relatives up the river.


Wednesday, June 10, 1908, page 1:
Deaths in Hampshire County.
         Mrs. Sallie Inskeep Pancake, wife of Joseph Pancake, of Romney, died Sunday morning in a hospital in Washington. Her remains were buried Tuesday at Romney.


March 25, 1909:
West Virginia
         A certificate of incorporation has recently been issued by the Secretary of State to the Imperial Orchard Co. a local corporation. H. C. Miller, G. P. Miller, I. H. C. Pancake, L. C. Pancake and J. S. Zimmerman are the charter members. The capital stock is $30,000 and the principal office is at Paw Paw.

          Mr. Richard Sloan Kuykendall and Miss Virginia Lee Pancake were married yesterday afternoon at Bethesda Chapel, Hampshire county, W. Va.
