4099--ELLA TAGGART8 (1738), born 29 Feb., 1852, near Tonica, La Salle co., Ill.; was educated for a teacher at the Illinois Normal University Normal, Illinois; taught in the public schools at Lexington, Ill., three years; married, first, 7 May, 1874, at Lowell, La Salle co., Ill., Theodore Le Huray Schick, born 20 May, 1849, at Prairieville, Lee co., Ill., son of Mathias and Elizabeth (Obrest) Schick; died 9 Aug., 1881, at Brownsville, Neb. Three months after her husband's death Mrs. Schick was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction for Omaha co., Neb. (in which the State Normal School is located), and was re-elected in 1883. She married, second, 3 Sept., 1884, at Lowell, Ill., Joseph Francis Pancake, born 7 Aug., 1841, at Bloomington, McLean co., Ill., son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Steele) Pancake, who served in the 68th Regiment, Illinois Infantry during the Civil War; was graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University, Class of 1864; admitted to the bar, 1867; represented Scott co. in the Kansas Legislature, 1893-97; was County Attorney, 1898-99.
"Hon. Theodore L. Schick studied law at Ann Arbor, Mich., graduating with the Class of 1871. He was admitted to the bar of Whiteside co., Ill., the same year, and located in Brownsville in August, 1871. As a lawyer, Mr. Schick was taking high rank in this State. He has held several important offices in Brownsville. In the fall of 1880 he was nominated for representative by the Republican Convention, and was elected. He was offered the nomination for Senator, but declined it. As a member of our City School Board, Mr. Schick was a faithful and conscientious worker. The funeral services were held at the family residence Wednesday at 10 A. M., Rev. E. J. Willits, pastor of the M. E. Church, officiating. On the first day of September, 1881, term of the District Court of Omaha co., the bar paid 'a deserved tribute of respect to the memory of a just man and a good lawyer.' He stood the highest among those who knew the most of law. He was a scholarly lawyer. Had he lived, he would have been at the head of his profession in this county."
