     "Adam Pancake, of Middleton township, a prominent farmer and capitalist of that township, died last week. He had been going down in health for some time."

Mrs. LeRoy Gilmore

      EAST PALESTINE, Sept. 27 (Special) -- Mrs. Faye Gilmore, wife of LeRoy Gilmore of Unity Road, died suddenly Tuesday at 6:30 p. m. while sitting in a car. She was 49.
     They had gone to a nearby home to buy some wire and Mr. Gilmore found her dead when he returned to the car. She had been ill with heart trouble.
     A daughter of George and Anna Fowler Pancake, she was born Aug. 20, 1901 at Negley. She was graduated from East Palestine High School and Beaver Falls Business College and was married to Mr. Gilmore on June 16, 1925.
     She was a member of the Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star and the Amaranth Court.
     Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Keith Gilmore at home; a brother, Charles Pancake of East Palestine, and a sister, Mrs. Ethel Bushless of St. Petersburg, Fla.
     Services will be held Friday at 1:30 p. m. from the Van Dyke Funeral Home by Rev. Carl Asmus. Burial will be in Glenview Cemetery.
     Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p. m.

          Edwin S. Foulks. Among the prominent residents and highly esteemed citizens of East Liverpool is Edwin S. Foulks, general merchant, and member of one of Columbiana County's pioneer families. He was born at Calcutta, Ohio, Sept. 6, 1869, and is the son of Albert G. and Amy (Pancake) Foulks.
          Albert G. Foulks, deceased, was a native of Columbiana County and one of the well known attorneys of his time. He was the son of William Foulks, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, who built the first house at Calcutta in Columbiana County. Albert G. Foulks practiced law and also engaged in the mercantile business during his life. He served during the Civil War and is now deceased. His widow lives at Calcutta. They were the parents of four children: Edwin S., the subject of this sketch; George, a farmer, lives near East Liverpool; Margaret, married William Moore, a farmer, lives in St. Clair Township, Columbiana County; and Mattie, lives with her mother.
          Edwin S. Foulks was reared and educated in Columbiana County. He succeeded to his father's business at Calcutta and has always been interested in the general merchandise business. He served as postmaster of that place until the advent of the rural free delivery system, at which time the Calcutta post office was discontinued.
          Mr. Foulks was married to Miss Grace Simms, who was born at Cannons Mills, Columbiana County, the daughter of William Simms, deceased. To them were born three children: William S., mention of whom is made below; Albert, married Nellie Swanson, of Wellsville, and they live on the old Foulks homestead near Calcutta; and Mary, deceased.
          William S. Foulks, who is successfully engaged in the practice of law at East Liverpool, was born near Calcutta. He was educated in the public schools, East Liverpool High School, was graduated from Bethany College, and in 1915 received his degree in law from Ohio State University. He has offices in the Little Building. Mr. Foulks was married to Miss Summe, of Columbus, Ohio. They have two sons, Edwin and William, Jr. Mr. Foulks is a veteran of the World War and was one of the organizers of the East Liverpool Post of the American Legion, of which he has served as commander several times. He has attended all of the national conventions of the Legion as a delegate. He is also a member of La Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux. He is a member of the Columbiana Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, American Bar Association and Southern Columbiana County Bar Association.
          Edwin S. Foulks is a member of the Presbyterian Church. He is a Republican and has held many township and county offices.

Civil War Pension Record of William Henry Pancake, National Archives File #SC 804-838

          William Henry Pancake served as a private in Company F, 87th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry from June 6, 1862 to October 1, 1862, and in the 26th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery from February 26, 1864 to September 2, 1865.
          In his "Declarartion For Pension", dated October 29, 1920, William stated that he was born June 18th, 1844 in Middleton Township and was a resident of Negley, Columbiana Co., Ohio. He gave his physical description at time of enlistment as 5 feet, 6 inches tall, light complexion, dark eyes and light hair.
          William was hospitalized for measles at Vicksburg, Mississippi from April 7, 1864 to May 28, 1864. From December 9, 1864 to January 25, 1865 he was in the hospital at Natchez, Mississippi suffering from typhoid fever.
          On a circular from the Bureau of Pensions dated January 15, 1898, he stated that he was married to Melissa Early at Darlington, Pennsylvania by Rev. Patterson. He listed the names and birthdates of his living children as follows: Jennie, January 19, 1872; Geo. W., September 6, 1873; Mattie, January 27, 1878; Bessie, January 3, 1880; Maud, April 26, 1882; and Fred E., December 27, 1888.
          In 1913, William brought the Family Bible of his father, George Pancake, to a notary public to prove that he was born on June 18th, 1844.
          About 1928, William moved in with his daughter Bessie and her husband Chalmers R. Saint at RFD. 1, Rogers, Columbiana Co., Ohio. He died there on September 27th, 1930. Fred Pancake was the administrator of his estate.

Will of Benjamin Pancake: Dated June 27, 1839; proved May 15, 1844. Recorded in Book 12, Page 302. One third of his estate to go to his wife Amy as long as she remains his widow and does not remarry. The other two thirds to be divided among his heirs - not named. He appointed his son, George Pancake, and Peter Young to be executors of his will. The will was witnessed by Samuel and Peter Young. Benjamin signed with his mark, a circle with a dot in the center.

Appraisment and Inventory: Benjamin Burson, Hugh Gaston and Wm. Brown were appointed appraisers May 20, 1844. Value of personal property came to $495.45. The amount owed the estate was $5,585.96.

Sale Bill: The auction took place on June 11, 1844 and realized $287.91.

First Account: October 27, 1845. Legatees: Widow, Ottenthall Young, George Davidson, Henry Shepler, George Bard, Thompson J. Irwin, Jacob Geiselman, William George, James Davidson, and George Pancake.

Final Account: November 13, 1847. Legatees: James Davidson, Ottenthall Young, Henry Shepler, William George, George Bard, T.J. Irwin, George Davidson, Richard Stark [or Stock] (guardian for Louisa), and Jacob Geiselman.

Supplement to the Final Account: April 18, 1863. Legatees: Louisa Pancake, Ottenthall Young, George Bard, William George, George Pancake, George Davidson, Jacob Geiselman, James Davidson, T. J. Irwin, Henry Shepler, Matthew Davidson, Lititia Young, and Isabel Irwin.

Henry Shepler and his wife Anna Amy Pancake resided in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
