Another of the pioneers of the Dassel community answered the last summons last Thursday noon, April 12th, when Linzay Pankake passed away at his home in the village. He had suffered a heart attack last January, from which he made a surprising recovery, but his death came from another attack suffered but an hour before the end. Mr. Pankake was 80 years, 7 months and 18 days old at the time of his passing.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, April 16th, at the Mission Covenant Church, with Reverend Sigfrid Carlson conducting the services. Solos were sung by Mrs. Sigfrid Carlson and Miss Louise Swanstrom, and they also sang a duet. The floral offerings and the large number of contributions to missions attested the esteem felt for the deceased.
Masonic services were conducted at the grave by Griswold Lodge, with James Campbell of Litchfield officating. Interment was made in the Dassel cemetery. The honorary pallbearers were Frank DeLong, Wm. DeLong, Albert Colberg, John Mabusth, Wm. Clarquist and A. W. Coleman. The active pallbearers were O. E. Linquist, B. O. Lawson, L. R. Peel, John Sallberg, K. E. Gayner and Eldon Hardy.
Linzay Pankake was born on a farm near Ironton, Ohio on August 24, 1864, and came to this neighborhood in 1867, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Pankake. With them came his grandfather, Abraham Pankake, and uncles Sam and Washington Pankake. Dassel was not on the map and the railroad was not here at that time but came two years later. He had lived here for 78 years, probably the longest time of any of our citizens.
In his younger days he did general farm work for others and also farmed on his own account. In 1896 he was employed by the Minnesota & Dakota Elevator Co. to assist in managing their elevator in Dassel. In 1901 Mr. Pankake was appointed manager of the elevator for this company and its successors, the New London Milling Company.
In 1908 he purchased the elevator and operated it until 1931 when he sold it to the Farmers Elevator Co. and retired from active business.
He was married in 1899 to Miss Hulda Rundquist, which union was blessed with six children, all of whom, together with their mother, are left to mourn his passing. The children are: Frank of Portland, Oregon; Marion (Mrs. B. L. Gayner), Blanche (Mrs. J. R. Elliott) and Lynnette (Mrs. J. R. Schunert), all of Dassel; Louis, in the Army Medical Corps at Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Alan, in the Air Corps, stationed in India.
Mr. Pankake belonged to the Dassel Fire Department from 1903 to 1929, was several times a member of the village council, and also served on the Dassel School board. On January 16, 1896 a charter was granted for Griswold Lodge No. 218 A. F. & A. M. Mr. Pankake had served as Junior Warden, as Master, and was still a member at the time of his death.
The esteem felt for the deceased by the entire community is best expressed by one of his pioneer friends, O. E. Linquist, in the following tribute:
"He was honest, fearless, courteous, warm-hearted and unselfish, and enjoyed the confidence of his fellow citizens. He possessed a personality that men admired and drew friends to him with a strong attachment. Truly it may be said of Linzay Pankake: he is not dead but sleeps. Such souls forever live.
"He was a man in every sense of the word. Able, courageous, industrious, and devoted to his family and friends. His memory and good influence will always remain.
"Linzay Pankake has passed away. No longer will we see his smiling face and hear his friendly voice. He has passed away but he is not forgotten, for he has left behind him that greatest of all legacies, an honored name in memories of earned deeds well done."

Standal, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Sisson, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
