OBITUARIES

SUICIDED.

Alfred Pancake Shuffles off the Mortal Coil at Laurel Furnace.

The community of Greenup, Ky., was shocked Sunday morning when the news came that Alfred Pancake had committed suicide, as he had many friends. He was square in his dealings, his word being as good as his bond. He was carrying on a blacksmithing and wagon-making business and was doing well, making money, but from some cause his mind became unbalanced. He cut his throat with a small pen-knife, in the upper story of the boarding house. His son and several other persons were with him. After he had cut his throat, his son helped him down stairs, when he fell dead. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn their loss. The grief is more severely felt because his death was caused by his own act.
Coroner Brady held the inquest. Verdict, suicide.
Pancake imagined he would come to want, but this would hardly have been possible, as, when he cut his throat he had in his pockets $60 in gold and was making $2.50 to $5 a day at his trade. He had become insane and committed the rash act.

The Portsmouth Times, Portsmouth, Ohio, Saturday, July 26, 1913, Page Five.

Pancake's Death Was Purely Accidental, C.&O. Not To Blame

A coroner's jury, impanelled by 'Squire J. W. Brickey to investigate the killing of Howard Pancake, aged 18, at South Portsmouth, Tuesday evening, held that death was accidental and no one was to blame.
The boy had been riding the "blind baggage" of westbound C. & O. accommodation train No. 7, and to keep anyone from seeing him alight, started to swing off from the far side, failing to observe an express truck that had been placed between the tracks for eastbound Fast Flyer No. 2. His skull was crushed and his lifeless body dropped to the platform. It is said the boy was making his way to Gary, Ind., to visit a brother, when death overtook him.
The body was turned over to Undertaker Harry Luke, of Fullerton, to be prepared for burial. The unfortunate was a son of Albert [Alfred] and Rachel C. Pancake. His father died 18 years ago. He also leaves two brothers, Morris, of Portsmouth, and Edward, of Gary, Ind., and four sisters, Mrs. Flora Harr, of Taylor, Ky., Mrs. Garnet Harden, of Letitia, Ky., Mrs. Ida Roisters [Addie Royster], of Potters, Ky., and Mrs. Grace Cantrel, of Portsmouth. His mother recently married Col. A. C. Cooper, well known Greenup, Ky., lawyer and newspaper man. The mother and sisters are almost prostrated over the boy's tragic death. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon, at 1 o'clock. The remains will be laid to rest alongside those of the father in the Liberty, Ky., cemetery.
