The State of Ohio Knox County ss-
Personally came before me a Notary Public in and for said county Samuel Harman of lawfull age,
and a resident of Knox County Ohio and a person I consider credible for truth, and after he
had been by me duly sworn the truth to tell, deposed as follows to wit -
"I volunteered into the U.S. Service in Company I in the 2nd Regiment of Ohio heavey Artillery
in the war of 1861. I joined the Service at Columbus in the county of Franklin in the State of
Ohio on, or about the 14th day of October 1864 for the term of one year and was honorably
discharged from said Service for reason that the war closed.
I knew whilst in the said Service, one William C. Pancake, of Coshocton County Ohio. He
volunteered into said Company and Regiment at the same time & place that I did. That the said
Pancake and myself, were examined at the time we joined the Service, and by the same Mustering
in Surgeon and were both reported to be sound healthy men & were mustered into the U.S. Service
in said Company. That we remained with our said Company until about the first day of May 1865
and whilst our Company and Regiment was stationed at Knoxville Tennessee, I was taken sick with
fever and was put into the U.S. Hospital. And I did not remain sick long before William C.
Pancake was brought to the Hospital with Dyarrhea, and I did remain on the sick list but a
short time, after Pancake came there until I got fit for duty and I was sent to the Regiment.
And at that time, Pancake was transferred to an Hospital at Nashville Tennessee the name of the
same I cannot give now for lack of memory.
That on, or, about the first day of August 1865 our Regiment again came to Nashville Tennessee.
I went to the Hospital and enquired for Pancake and I was informed by the Surgeon in charge of
the Hospital that he had been transferred to another Hospital and was quite sick with the
Dyarrhea when he was removed to the other Hospital. That shortly after that time, the said
Company & Regiment was discharged for the reason that the war was over and we returned to our
homes. And soon after our arrival home, Pancake sent me word that he had arrived at his home
in Warsaw, Coshocton County Ohio, that he was quite sick, and desired that I should come and
see him, which I intended to do, but before I could leave home, I heard he Pancake had Died at
his home at Warsaw of Chronic Dyarrhea.
I am not of kin to the Pancake family nor have I any interest in the Prosecution of a claim his
widow has for Pension, now Pending."
