The following information is a transcription of the family record in the Bible of Spencer Rector and Susan Pancake of Pickaway Co., Ohio. Also inserted in the Bible are what appear to be pages from the Bible of Joseph Pancake, Susan's brother. The Bible is in the possession of Mary K. Perry (gg granddaughter of Spencer and Susan Rector).
Mary writes:
"Jane Rankin from Washington Court House, Fayette Co., Ohio, saved the bible
from a fire at an estate sale in 1967. It was being burned in the back of
the home where the estate sale was being held. The man burning what he
thought to be worthless items was asked by Mrs. Rankin if she could see the
bible. He told her she could have it if she wanted it because he was "just
going to burn it anyway." Mrs. Rankin, being an ardent genealogist, took
the smoldering bible from the edge of the fire and stored it in her attic.
Several years ago I, Mary Perry, placed a query in the OGS Newsletter (Ohio
Genealogical Society) asking for information about the siblings and parents
of Susan Pancake who married Spencer Rector. Mrs. Rankin, having remembered
the unusual name of Pancake, retrieved the bible from her attic where she
had it stored. Mrs. Rankin had the courtesy to call me, say she had read
my query in the Newsletter and tell me she believed she might be able to
help. After telling me the story of how she had obtained the bible she
asked if I would like to have it! I cannot begin to tell you how much her
thoughtful gesture has meant to me. I received the bible within a week of
her call. That was nearly ten years ago."
