Week-9
Jan 11th, '09
Well, if you want to meet the top pigeon in the plaza I know just
where to send you. It always roost's in the North clock face of the
main plaza's clock tower. You will note that the hours are numbered in
traditional Mayan script.
Yup, we got another newcomer this week. First meeting ever.
And on the subject of recovery here is a sign of commitment.
There was some interest in what that parking lot wall looked like that
last week's String ray logo came from.

One of the advantages of touring on foot or by bicycle is that you have
time to stop and look around. Here is what one of the little local hotel's
courtyards looks like.
There
are quite a few motorbikes with stereo speakers mounted in their
fairings here but this is the first bicycle I've seen with iPod driven
speakers.
Here is another 'national flag of the tropics' blowing in the breeze. I
do love seeing these Hibiscus hedges in January.
This Moorish/Mediterranean looking grill conceals the stairway.
My
diving visitors arrived this week and one of the stops on our walking
tour was the town's cemetery. Here is a view of the well used for
watering the flowers.
Here are my visitors Dan And Frank on their first dive in the Ocean.
It's hard to tell, but they're smiling.

They
had no problems at all but I sure did. I left a vital component to my
dive outfit at home. With great generosity and expertise from some
local dive friends' at
Scuba
Mau I got in the water.
Here is what my brain felt like.
I think this is a Banded Jawfish (Thanks KTA). They dig a hole that they then enter tail
first and wait for some unsuspecting little fish to investigate. They
carry and drag the rocks to surround their burrow enterance.
Frank got to watch some noisy boat traffic.
There seemed to be quite a few star fish. I flipped one over to take a
look and put him back.
If this next guy is alarmed he will start swallowing water until he
inflates to 6-8" with all those spines sticking out. Not very
appetizing.
Trunk fish
I'm using an auxiliary wide angel lens and not having much luck editing
the colors very accurately. Chromatic Aberration?
Here is Dan with his standard UW camera, and getting much better results.
Simpler is better.
This is part of the fenced enclosure of the Stingray pens.
You can almost make out this guys face.
The city has planted young palms in their new sidewalk project. Some
have lost their heads to young vandals and are looking for a fresh start.

This tree is slowly escaping it's walled garden.
This is some more grafitti deterant. I wonder what message is entwined
in the vine work.
This little cutie has been very nicely restored from last year.
