Week Seven
Dec 23, 2007
The English language AA clubhouse is well located and excellent in almost every way.
English Language AA
Cozumel, Mexico
6 PM Open meetings, 7 nights / week.
Clubhouse is 2 blocks from Mc Donalds
on 10 Av SUR, at Calle 5 SUR.
Come in the gate and go up our
12 step spiral stair case.

There are times during High Season when it's a little small. Can
you imagine 40 people attending a meeting in here? Some were sitting on
stools outside the door on the patio and looking in through the window.
There was a camaraderie not unlike that experienced by disaster
survivors. Just glad to be there.

There has been an ongoing but low key search for larger alternative
locations and so far the most promising has been the Ebenezer English
language Presbyterian church.

No, that drum set is not a good sign. There is another room across the plaza on the top floor of the Annex.

None of these spaces are Air Conditioned and the church elders thought
we could just donate two AC units to the Church. They also had a problem
with the concept of Alcoholism being a disease. They thought it might
be helpful if they got to present the Church's teachings to us on the
subject. There was even less humorous enlightenment as well so the search
goes on.
My search for the manufacturer of this VW 'kit car' is ongoing:

And it has delivered me to Dan W's VW repair and rental compound. He is
now developing a rental 3 wheeler using a VW drive train. There are
some quirky aspects to driving a 3 wheeler he is very much aware of and
seems to have elegantly addressed. Varoooom

He was familiar with the mystery 'Kit Car' and gave me some more
information but the identity of the manufacturer is still elusive.
The central plaza of Cozumel's one and only town, San Miguel, is
seasonally decorated. Christmas is surpassed only by Carnival. The huge
Christmas tree has a Crèche inside.

You sort of had to be there for the full effect.
=)
One of this years food fads is the Chinese Buffet where you pay a
dollar a dip for your choice of dishes. You pick, they dip. Here is the
makings of a price war:

(8.00 Pesos = ~75¢)
I noticed these stools at a street front beer bar. Is it just me or do they look like old bottle caps?

A couple blocks towards the plaza from my place there is this old
fashioned looking house I've always noticed. This year the owner
divided the lot and sold one half to a couple who are building a
magnificent modern B&B. The antique front building will be
refurbished and house a property management company who will look after
the B&B.

Notice how they matched the lapstrake wood siding pattern in cement.

This is the view once you step through the antique facade.

The steps on the right, above, are interesting. Going up you want to start out on the 'right' foot. =)

Looking towards the sea from the roof shows the pool, tiled with smoothed glass discs.

Here is a better look at the discs.

The view from the roof is unobstructed. That is the Airport's control tower in the far distant right.

It had been a couple years since I'd seen Aurelio and then this week. .
. . there he was. I'd been wondering how he's been doing.
=)
Yes it's another election year here.
(more on that subject as Carnival approaches.)

Here is a very thoughtful banister idea:
I wonder if it's filled with concrete.

After our AA meetings we often go out for a bite. Here is my first
experience with Mexican Pizza. (half vegetarian, half Hawaiian) (Did I take my Stantin today?)

Did I mention that it's Christmas in a couple days? The Governor of the Island
lives just up the hill in his private walled estate. There is 24 Hr
police protection of the compound which is something of a comfort. Each
year he holds a Christmas party for all his friends and political
faithful that runs to all hours. I was rousted out at 4:30 this morning
by some very loud and very bad Karaoke from the party. Where are the
cops when you need them? The compound entrance is the Alamo shaped
lights on the right. Note the full moon. That may explain a lot.

This black Duner is an example of some local talent.

Here is the Winter Solstice sunset viewed out of the clubhouse window.
Shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The Sun's arc is
as far South as it will go. Next morning the days start getting longer.
Top that for a Christmas present.
Have a great Holiday.
