Week
08a
You may recall the stilt walkers from Week-04,05
in PDC. I ran into them again here, across from one of the diamond
merchants
on the sea front here on Cozumel. The girl's English is fluent. They
wear roller blade
knee pads and if they fall they hit on their knees first. Ouch!. There
is a short fellow that 'clowns' while they 'stilt' and acts as a
'catcher' if someone goes down. Many viewers try to ignore them
in hopes they will just go away, the sight is so weird. They are quite animated and personable in their performance
and there will be no ignoring them! Great troopers and a lot of fun.

When I inquired about the impounded vehicle auction at the Palace
Municipal (city hall) last week they said most of the vehicles were at
a lot down South across from the last cruise ship pier. I biked down
that way Saturday afternoon and passed this huge traffic sign base
where the highway starts. It's not just the 200 MPH hurricane gusts but
the
oscillating of the sign that weakened the metal. The sign acted like an
airfoil and would try to fly in one direction until it 'stalled' and
fell back to try to fly again. In a high wind this oscillating can
be so fast it makes a buzzing sound. It doesn't take long for even
steel to work harden and fail, usually very near the fixed point.

I found the impound lot about a quarter mile South of where I expected
it to be
. They had a pretty good collection of vehicles but most were wrecks.
There was no sale last year because of a change in office holders so
everything is quite deteriorated. The most interesting item there, for
me, was this VW Bug limo. It's way beyond restoration now but must have
been quite a sight in it's prime.

Some of the outfits, in better condition, turned out to be Federally
confiscated drug related cars and not to be sold. There is a
pretty good selection of motor scooters (Moto's), which I'm actually
most interested in. My understanding is that the sale date will be
announced on the local radio station so the turnout should be
considerable.

After Saturday nights meeting I pedaled by the supermarket for some
things on the way home and found this cutie on the way out. It's a very nicely done VW Variant (Brasilia) Squareback
(Type IV),
and a
daily driver too.

It worked so well last week, lets close this page with another sunset.
