I've been asked about how I did this web page and the answer is 'as simply as possible'. I use an IP in Minneapolis named www.USFamily.net, and I asked them for a suggestion. They said it appears that I use Netscape for my eMail so I might check out their free web authoring module called 'Composer'. I had gotten used to using Netscape's eMail module, 'Messenger', and sure enough Composer used many of the same editing tools. Here is USFamily Tech support's note to me.
It sounds like you'll be best off using
Netscape Composer (the
HTML editor that's part of Netscape versions
3 and up, which I assume is
what you're using on your PowerBook) to
piece the photos together into
pages and then upload them either to Usfamily.net
or to Tripod.com.
The main thing to watch out for when using
Netscape Composer is that it
will happily use the file system of your
Mac in ways that the Web will not
understand. So rename all your photos
with Internet standard names (no
spaces, slashes, or ampersands, but do add
.jpg on the end) before you start building
the page, and be sure to save the page in
the same folder as the photos.
Then when you tell Netscape to upload the
page (practice this at home
before you go to Mexico!) it will upload
all the photos at that time.
I use old Netscape 4.8 on my
Mac iBook because I'm used to it. There are newer versions and now the
next generation is called Foxfire I think. Also most of you will be using
a PC rather than a Mac and may find even easier resources available.
There is a whole new medium
for this type chronicling called Blogs (web-logs). Here is a Blogging site
that may have recently joined Google: http://new.blogger.com/home.pyra
.
In either case I've found
the instructions, tutorials and discussion boards to be very helpful. I
attended an excellent 'Dreamweaver' school at FirstTech in Minneapolis
but was pretty quickly overwhelmed because of my very limited experience
going in.
ABOVE ALL: A couple of my
web authoring friends have been helpful above and beyond the call of friendship,
(Many thanks again)
