Just Say Know: Educating Females for the 21st Century

Molding an institution of higher learning for the 1990s and beyond, the founders of Pandora College for Women recognized the wisdom of reading the Great Books (written by the Great Men) and of reclaiming the legacies of past traditions in medicine, science, the classics, and ladylike deportment that must combine to educate today's females for regaining their rightful place as society's custodians of modesty.
This performance satire explores the impact on women in higher education of the use and misuse of science, the recurring nature of biological arguments, and the back-to-the-classics movement.
Four characters, Mrs. Bennett Canon (a member of the Board of Trustees of Pandora College), Dr. Mildred Avon (Dean of Wellness), Miss Prudence Post VanModern (Assistant Dean of Student Affairs), and Dr. Roswitha Gandersheim Jones (Academic Dean) all describe the philosophical underpinnings of the college (turning back the destructive impulses of contemporary feminism by reviving the "dictatorship of the ovaries" dictum of the 19th century) and the medical, social, curricular and architectural manifestations of that philosophy.

Approximately forty minutes long, the presentation is followed by a discussion period during which the audience is invited to question the characters.
Where has Just Say Know been performed?
"I am writing to thank you again for bringing Just Say Know to the University of Texas at Dallas. As you know, we are a commuter campus of non-traditional students juggling careers, families, and school. In the past, it has been almost impossible for us to bring together a sizable audience for any kind of extracurricular programming. Just Say Know brought over 100 students and faculty and staff members from all 4 sponsoring schools together from across campus. The show was funny, wise, and allowed students at this science/technology institution to think seriously about how gender structures education and workplaces. The question/answer session at the end of the performance was wonderful--and my students welcomed the opportunity to participate in the show.
